Revision Support – English

Dear Year 11 Parents/Carers,

I am writing as Head of English. I will be sending a fortnightly communication to keep you up to date on what Year 11s are doing in lessons and what is expected of them outside of lessons. If you want to ask questions or offer suggestions, feel free to contact me via e-mail to raymond.gallagher@hdhs.school

These fortnightly communications will direct you to this page where lengthy details will be posted, in order to give you as much information as possible. I believe by having a fortnightly focus it makes it easier to track what students should be doing and allows for a step by step approach.

Here is the first communication for September 2018:

Communication from March 2019:
Dear Parent/Carer,
I am writing as your child’s English teacher. This is a generic email relevant to all the students that I teach however if you want to discuss anything specific to your son/daughter, please feel free to contact me.
From today the 25th March, there are exactly 50 days to the first Literature exam paper. We are busy working as best we can in lesson time but it is really important that students are putting in effort outside of lessons. I’ve attached a 50 day countdown revision timetable which has a useful Literature revision task for every day of the next 50 days. These are all tasks that if completed will put each student in a very good place to be successful in their Literature exams.
The students have now completed a lot of PPEs(mock exams) and have received feedback on where improvements are needed. If you have any specific questions about your child’s PPE performance please get in touch with me.The key message is that any gain is a positive. Many students are going up in marks each time they do an exam paper and that is encouraging. It is also important that students reflect on their exam performances and that they acknowledge what they they need to do in the real exams to get more marks.
For Easter, students will be set further revision guidance( a revision booklet)to make the most of the two weeks. The exams are getting closer but there is still a lot of time that can be used effectively to prepare for the exams- practise, practise, practise….
Students also have access to English revision websites and apps such as GCSEPOD and PiXLit which have been proven to support student progress.
After Easter, there will be exam skills sessions in the school hall every Saturday( up to the start of the exams) from 10am to 12:30am. This will be beneficial to students who feel that they struggle with time management, exam strategy and general exam skills. This will be delivered by me and is aimed at getting the best out of the exams. After Easter, more information on these Saturday sessions will be shared.
If you have any questions, please let me know.
Kind regards,
Ray Gallagher,
Assistant Headteacher/Head of English
 PiXLit

Y11 students have been given access to a new revision aid – PiXLit – to help with revision for English Literature. This is in addition to GCSEPod which the students have also been given access to for revision support.

You can access PiXLit by following this link :

https://englishapp.pixl.org.uk/index2.html

The PiXLit app contains the GCSE texts that our students study and there are a range of different activities to help strengthen the knowledge of those texts. The activities revolve around gaining a deeper understanding of quotations through testing memory recall of the quotes, reciting who said the quote or who the quote was about, events and happenings and literature terminology.

It is often difficult to drag teenagers away from their phone to focus on revision but this app allows them to revise on their phone.

Students have been given log-in details – all they have to do is download the free app. If students have queries about logins or how to use the app, they can find a member of the English department to support them.

Kind regards

Mr Gallagher
Head of English
