2020 RSHE & PSHEE Consultation

Written by Belinda Gosling on . Posted in Archived News, Promoted News, School News

Tuesday 7th July 2020

Dear Parents and Carers,

As a part of your child’s education at Harwich and Dovercourt High School, we promote personal wellbeing and development through a comprehensive Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education programme. PSHE education is the curriculum subject that gives young people the knowledge, understanding, attitudes and practical skills to live safe, healthy, productive live and meet their full potential.

PSHE education is taught throughout the school in every year group and is monitored and reviewed regularly by the staff and governing body. Please visit the school’s website: for more detail about our PSHE curriculum. All PSHE teaching takes place in a safe learning environment and is underpinned by our school ethos and values.

I am writing to let you know that, that the government have made some changes to the statutory subjects that your child/children receive while in education. As of September 2020, RSHE – Relationships, Sex and Health Education will become a statutory core subject. At Harwich and Dovercourt High School RSHE will be delivered alongside PSHE and Citizenship. In
preparation for the new statutory requirements I would like to consult with you, our parents and carers, so that you can express your views, ask any questions you may and to let us know if you have any concerns with the new requirements.

Over the next two weeks, starting Wednesday 8th July 2020 I am keen to get some feedback and engagement from our local community. I would like to invite you to take part in our Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) engagement survey. The survey will require you to fill out a Google Form after reading some key documentation provided by the government. I have also written a new policy which I would be keen for your comments on. This policy was approved by the local governing body pending consultation. I have developed this policy based on the recommendations of the government and PSHE association

As a school community, we are committed to working in partnership with parents /carers /guardians and local stakeholders. All responses will be treated with the strictest confidence. All completed survey’s must be submitted to the school by Wednesday 22nd July 2020. Your views will help us shape policy and influence how we deliver relationships, sex, and health education topics throughout the school. If you would like to see what the new statutory requirements are, please go to:

Understandably, this consultation process has been affected by the impact of Covid-19 and due to social distancing regulations, we have decided to conduct the consultation online. We have done this to ensure that you still have the opportunity to engage in the development of this new curriculum area and can provide us with your views and opinions. All documents related to this engagement survey are also available on our school website. If you would like assistance completing this survey or would like a paper-based version of this survey to complete, please contact the school so arrangements can be made

As soon as the school is fully reopened and all students return I would like to invite you to attend a parent information meeting to find out more about what your child will learn, view the materials and resources being used in lessons and discover how you can best support your child to discuss these topics at home. The details of this event will be communicated to you as soon as I can confirm a date.

Please click on this link if you wish to complete the survey – Relationships, Sex and Health Education – Engagement Survey July 2020

In the meantime, if you would like to discuss any concerns, queries, or questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Yours sincerely

Shaun Sansom
Head of PSHE, Citizenship and Careers

Safe in Essex have put together a virtual weekly online programme. This is for any young people ages 13-19 across Essex that want to join in and can access this via Microsoft teams. As you will see, some of the sessions will focus on topics which may affect young people such as our drug and alcohol awareness session or our LGBTQ+ session and others are a little less topical and focus on getting you moving around or creating your masterpiece.

Whatever it is that interests you, send us an email at; or for any queries, please make contact with Rebecca Joy, Service Manager for The Children’s Society on 07725 639571
