Duke of Edinburgh Award

Duke of Edinburgh Award
March 19, 2014 hdhsadmin

Harwich and Dovercourt High School have recently had 18 students achieve the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh (dofe) award, which is recognised as the world’s leading achievement award. The students are the first to receive the award from the school. They travelled to Colchester Townhouse to receive their award, along with other young adults who had achieved their award in Tendring. Before the students receive their award they have to complete 4 sections over a 3-6 month period; volunteering, skill, physical and the expedition section.

The award inspires students to make a difference within the community. Each student has given their time in the community and have helped local nurseries, local sports clubs and charity shops. Students have learnt to take on responsibility, have built new relationships and have learnt to be trusted and to trust others. The students have joined local sports clubs to achieve a greater physical fitness and a healthy lifestyle. Students have also spent time learning a new talent or skill. It has been a challenge for each of the students. All students have worked hard. They have come across many challenges along the way.

During the expedition section they have braved all elements when camping. They have also learnt the skills required to navigate in a new area, use a small trangia to cook a meal, pack a rucksack and general survival skills.
